Pierre was born August 4, 1934, in Saint Étienne de Baïgorry, France, to parents Jo- seph and Marie-Louise Calleja and was the eldest of four children. Pierre immigrated to Chico, CA, in 1953 before moving to San Francisco. There, he proudly started his own gardening business before he was 21 years old. Pierre became a US Citizen in 1985 alongside good friends Jean-Pierre Izoco andMiguel Leonis. He loved all dogs, and they loved him; he was convinced all dogs naturally understand Basque. Pierre met Pierrette Aurnague in January 1957, and they weremarried November 15, 1958, in Su- sanville, CA,where Pierrette’s parents lived. Their sonsMichel andAlbert were born in San Francisco, and their daughter Denise was born in SanMateo, CA. The Callejas lived in Belmont, CA, for many years before moving to Sparks, NV, in 1980. Once inNevada, Pierre continued his gardening business for decades. The Callejas immediately joined the Zazpiak Bat Reno Basque Club, where Pierre became a very active member in picnics, festivals, and Mus (card game) tournaments cel- ebrating his Basque heritage. In the 1980s, Pierre helped form Gardnerville’s Mendiko Euskaldun Cluba, in which he was also very involved for the rest of his life. Pierre’s favorite pastimes included cultivating his backyard vegetable garden, reading about world cultures,watching cooking programs, meeting his friends for weekly lunch and Mus games at Louis’ Basque Corner, and fishing the many rivers and streams of the Sierra Nevada, especially his annual camping and fishing trips with his good friends to Bridgeport, CA. Pierre was preceded in death by his parents and his son Michel. He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Pierrette; sonAlbert; daughter Denise and son-in-law Doug; grandchildren Allison, Shelby, and Kevin; sisters Gracianne and Marie; brother Raymond; and many nieces, nephews, and more family in France. Pierre will forever be “gure Ai- tachi” (our grandfather) to his family, whom he loved so much and who will forever love him. There will be no services, as requested by Pierre. Pierre Calleja.
